Gianni Schicchi / Buoso's Ghost

March 22-24, 2019 - Conant Performing Arts Center

Two one-act opera comedies in one night!

Gianni Schicchi, Puccini’s only comedy, tells the story about a greedy family’s fight over their dead relative Buoso's fortune. Fearing that Buoso has left his entire estate to a monastery, the family relies on their cunning neighbor Gianni Schicchi to help. Gianni agrees, but will he keep all the money for himself?

Michael Ching’s modern sequel, Buoso's Ghost, written in 1996, continues the story and sets a murder mystery in motion. Gianni Schicchi becomes suspicious that Buoso may not have died of natural causes. He finds evidence instead that Buoso may have been poisoned! Now, which family member could have done it?

Buoso's Ghost was a Georgia premiere! Read what the critics are saying:

[Ching uses] a more modern musical mode, yet avoiding excessive atonality. The score subtly introduces brief tongue-in-cheek quotations from other works, ranging from Mozart to Sondheim, plus one unmistakable interjection of Shostakovich.

Composer and librettist Ching ... borrows snatches of Puccini tunes and weaves them into his own conservative-eclectic idiom, tossing in bits of American pop ... for merry measure. The vocal writing is expert, the orchestration light enough to allow the singers to project the text clearly. Buoso is charming and unpretentious ....
